later power source debate reboot
« on: September 15, 2011, 09:30:42 PM »
I seem to recall that the solar arrays start to become cost prohibitive after level 21 in one of the sfc universes. has anyone crunched the numbers for sde and come up with anything different?

That depends on what you mean by cost prohibitive.
However, at higher energy tech levels, you can get the same energy out of a nuclear plant while only using roughly 2/3rds of the number of fields, compared to solar. In a high-mine-ratio universe, it's building fields and not resources that will ultimately limit what you have on your planets. Yes, it does consume some of your hydrogen, but 1 or 2 hydrogen levels will more than make up the difference.

It also depends on the temperature of your planet and how much you want to invest in Defenses.

Quite simply everyone plays different, but I personally stop building solar arrays when the cost of solar sats is cheaper per energy unit provided.

In X2, when I just recently recolonized a planet, i didnt even build any solar arrays, just went straight for Cap, Foundry, Ship Yard, Sats, Defenses, and mines.  Pretty much in that order.

I know a lot of the top players in many of the unis rely heavily on solar sats, and what they save on the solar array, the just build another hydrogen synthesizer to make up for the lost production on a hot planet.

I used to rely heavily on sats  as a bridge to keep production going while I upgraded either solar or nuke. but in an attack I would lose all my sats and have reduced production. you are going to pay for the solar array one way or another, might as well spend it one, time as opposed to several, is my opinon now.

I have solar array and Nuclear Power plant level zero on most of my planets in several unis.

Interesting, Do you intercept alot of probes because you have so many sats? Do you get attacked very often? if so what do you do about lost power and reduced production?
It would save fields! there is alot of debate over that subject,I am still trying to decide. I can see both sides.

further to rods post...

level 18 NPP =9115 @level 12 enrgy tech..
to get near enough the same power you have to build a solar array level 29...... so thats already 11 less fields used for that same amount of power(level 29 =9,200)
D estined to sow the seeds of EVIL

What more needs to be said... I did not make the chart big enough

I am building level 18 NPP's now, with an insufficient energy tec of 15 (that will be my next crystal intensive research)...  I also have Solar Arrays level 29 on all my Permanent worlds,  but some of those worlds are almost full up. In the not so distance future I will need to bust those Solar Arrays down to zero to free up more fields. .... And having lost hard copies, and having lost my hard drive in the past; I like having this chart here on this cloud.

I am taking this chart up to insanity levels, hopefully I will never have to spend another two hours with a calculator remaking this chart again.

I would start pulling fuses one by one. I dont know your trailer but maybe they tied into the awning or something else that has power all the time. How about the rear bunks or a light in the rear Interior.
